Leaving Cert students asked to Get Home Safely pledge

61,000 Leaving Cert students from all over Ireland are receiving their results today and they are also getting another message from road safety professionals – a message urging them to drive safely after August was declared as the deadliest month on Irish roads in over nine years with 24 people losing their lives in 30 days.

After what was an extremely challenging year for leaving cert students tonight will be a time for them to celebrate with their fellow students.

Sgt James Malone roads policing unit Castlebar said: “We would urge parents to discuss their children’s plan for the evening, ask where they are going, who they are going with, how and when they plan on getting home including those walking and cycling.”

Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer communications department Mayo County Council  said:  “Firstly ,Congratulations to all the students who received their results, we would urge parents to discuss their children’s plan for the evening, ask where they are going, who they are going with, how and when they plan on getting home.”

We want young people to be aware of the dangers in cars and not to put themselves or their friends at risk, especially when it comes to travelling to venues to celebrate.”

The concern that the road safety office of Mayo County Council is voicing would be for students to keep their celebrations in proportion, and to keep themselves and their friends safe.
