Speeding still rampant on Irish roads.

Only one week into the month of August and there have already been countless reports of dangerous driving on Ireland’s roads.

Just this week, Clare Roads Policing Unit were conducting speed checks on the N85 when they detected a motorbike travelling at nearly 200kph in a 100kph zone. Another report of speeding from Naas Roads Policing Unit caught a motorist speeding in an 80km zone, this comes only a week after the Road Safety Authority (RSA) revealed that the majority of road deaths (so far this year,) have occurred on rural roads with a speed limit of 80km/h or higher.

The RSA also revealed that An Garda Síochána have issued close to 88,500 Fixed Charge Notices for speeding in first half of this year, and it seems that the number of Fixed Charge Notices getting handed out to motorists this year will only get higher.

Drug driving has also been an issue so far this month with five cases of people driving under the influence of either cannabis or cocaine. In one case Roads Policing Unit Dublin carried out 16 mandatory checkpoints, testing 400 drivers for alcohol and drugs, 9 of which failed their tests.
